British Flowers Week Day 4 - Delphinium21 June 2018We always look forward to the first batch of Delphinium to be delivered. One of only a few true blue flowers that never fail to blow us away. They add drama to any arrangement or garden with their tall stems filled with bright blue blooms. They are one of those flowers that look stunning on their own in a vase or mixed in with other flowers. You really can’t go wrong with them. To give them a long vase life, always cut them at an angle and put them into clean water. Remove any leaves that are below the water line so that the water stays fresh. Replace the water every 2-3 days to avoid a build-up of bacteria. Fun Facts….. Delphiniums are native to the Northern Hemisphere. They are commonly found in the mountainous African Tropics There are over 400 different types of Delphinium species Amazingly the Delphinium is part of the ranunculaceae family which are Buttercups Delphinium sap can be mixed with the chemical, alum, to make blue ink This is another flower that should not be eaten. They are very poisonous to humans and animals if consumed. Admire from afar! Despite this, Delphiniums used to be used to treat asthma Delphinium flower gets its name from the Greek word Delphin which means Dolphin. It’s thought that their flowers resemble the shape of a Dolphin...I’m not sure I see it can you? You may also have heard them called Larkspur which is named after the claws of a lark
